November 2007

"I loved the unparalleled exuberance of Fresh Sushi: the headlong,
confident use of watercolor; the interplay between neon colors and
rich darks and between overt and supressed images; and the chaotic
but utterly convincing composition. Fresh Sushi was breathtakingly
beautiful and it filled me with joy. I kept coming back to it, and each
time I looked, I saw more."
Maureen Bloomfield, Juror of Awards and Editor of The Artist's Magazine

From the Boys' Latin School of Maryland Laker Legacy:

It was not the tremendous turnout that made the day so special, or even the four Marine color guard present at the ceremony, but the special presentation that was unveiled on the field that day. Nicholas Simmons, a talented D.C. artist, was inspired to paint a portrait of Nick as soon as he heard the news of the Marine's death. Simmons felt an immediate connection with Nick and himself because their names coincided and he put tremendous effort into the work, the background of which is a letter sent home from Ziolkowski. The piece is entitled "Into the Sun" and is a work of watercolor and acrylic paint. This eternal memory of Nick's actions is on permanent display in the Upper School's library, nestled safely in the libaray section dedicated to the fallen hero.
